Have you dreamt of having perfectly shaped and filled brows?

Powder brows can bring that dream to fruition.

But what are powder brows, and how tedious are its after-care requirements?

Well, let’s find out!

What are Powder Brows?

Powder brows or “ombre brows” are a semi-permanent makeup solution that results in a shaded filled-in eyebrow look. This makeup technique uses a machine, much like a tattoo gun, to inject pigment into your eyebrow skin, creating a soft and powdery effect that looks natural and can last for 1-3 years.

What about Powder Brows Aftercare?

To get the best results for your powder brows, you have to take care of your brows post-procedure.

If you don’t follow the aftercare treatments suggested by your artist, your brows won’t heal evenly, retain their color, or last as long.

Here are some basic aftercare rules that you must abide by after your powder brow treatment:

  • Do not touch, itch, rub, or scratch your newly done brows. No matter how much you may want to.
  • Do not apply any makeup or creams (not specified by your artist) on the treated area.
  • Try to avoid getting water on your brows. Stay away from saunas, swimming pools, and overly long hot showers.
  • Avoid direct sunlight as much as possible.
  • Do not pick on any scabs or protrusions on your brows.
  • Do not sleep face-first.
  • Avoid working out or conducting activities that can cause sweating.
  • Keep your brow area clean.
  • Avoid all facial treatments or the application of cosmetic products until your brows are fully healed.

That may seem like a long list of rules, but trust us, if you want the best results, you must follow these rules until your eyebrows have healed and you have had your first touch-up.

Why is Powder Brows Aftercare Important?

Since powder brows are a form of semi-permanent tattooing, your skin needs time to heal, and the pigment needs time to settle.

Following the right aftercare routine can help:

  • Prevent infection
  • Ensure even healing
  • Maintain color retention
  • Keep your brows looking fresh for longer

The 5 Phases of Powder Brows Aftercare

Your brows will go through several phases during the healing process, which can last for about 4-6 weeks, depending on your lifestyle, skin type, and skin color.

Phase 1:

Accounts for the 1st and 2nd day post-procedure. In the first couple of days, your brows will appear darker and bolder than expected. This is completely normal, and there is nothing to be alarmed about.

Phase 2:

Last from days 3 to 5. Expect light scabbing and flaking. Make sure you avoid picking or touching the treated area!

Phase 3:

Also known as the ghosting phase, phase 3 lasts from days 6 to 10. Your brows will now start to look patchy and much lighter than normal. Don’t be alarmed. This is a natural part of the healing process, and while your brows may look like they have disappeared, it is important you trust the process.

Phase 4:

Now, things start to get easier. Phase 4 lasts from days 10 to 14. During this phase, the pigment starts to settle, and your brows gradually get darker and closer to their final color.

Phase 5:

The final phase of healing usually occurs between 4 and 6 weeks. It’s finally time for a touch-up. Getting a touch-up after your initial procedure is essential, as it allows the artist to correct any uneven areas and ensure your brow line looks perfect.

The Two Types Of Powder Brows Aftercare

Recommended aftercare routines for powder brows can vary from artist to artist. Some artists recommend wet healing while others recommend dry healing.

What’s the difference?

Wet healing requires you to wash your brows with sterile water and then pat your brows dry with a soft cloth or cotton pad. Once dry, you will apply an artist-recommended ointment to aid in the healing process.

Dry healing doesn’t require the use of ointments. In some cases, artists may recommend you wash your brows and then let them air dry, while others may ask you to avoid washing your brows altogether and just let them heal naturally.

Powder Brows Aftercare Do’s and Don’ts

The Do’s:

  • Keep your brows dry for at least 24-48 hours post-procedure to allow the pigment to settle.
  • Gently clean your brows twice a day using a damp cotton pad. No rubbing!
  • Apply artist-recommended healing ointment (if specified) in a thin layer.
  • Let the scabs fall off naturally to prevent uneven pigment loss.
  • Avoid sun exposure and always wear SPF once healed to prevent fading.
  • Stay hydrated and eat well!

The Don’ts:

  • No picking, scratching, or peeling! We can’t stress this enough. Doing this can pull pigment out and lead to patchy results.
  • Avoid excessive sweating, saunas, and swimming for at least 10 days.
  • No makeup and skincare products on your brows until they’re fully healed.
  • No retinol, exfoliants, or acids near your brows. They can cause premature fading.

How to Maintain Your Powder Brows Long-Term

Once your brows are fully healed, here’s how to keep them looking fresh:

  • Schedule touch-ups every 12-18 months to maintain color and shape.
  • Use SPF daily—sun exposure can cause fading.
  • Avoid harsh exfoliants around the brow area.
  • Stay hydrated—healthy skin holds pigment better.

FAQs

Q1) What if I have oily skin? Will powder brow aftercare be different?

If you have oily skin, powder brows could be ideal for you. In terms of aftercare, your artist will likely recommend dry healing. As your skin is naturally oily, it won’t need extra moisturizing.

Q2) What is the best way to clean my powder brows?

The best way to clean your newly done powder brows is to dampen a cotton pad and use it to pat your eyebrow region gently to remove any excess lymph. You can then dry it using a clean tissue.

Q3) When can I wash my face after powder brows?

This depends as artists may have different preferences. However, to be safe, at least wait a day or two before washing your face, and even then, make sure you do so very gently without any rubbing. It is only after 10 days that you should wash your face normally.
